Pest Control Services. Home and business. The business will fumigate peoples homes and businesses by spraying insecticide to kill and control pests like ants, cockroaches,mosquitoes,etc.
What skills are needed to do this? Where is this taught and how much will it cost?
Experience in the business of pest control and the insecticide/remedies that will be used.
What tools or equipment are needed? Where can they be bought, and how much will they cost?
Normal "back-pack" type spray equipment. Available from garden and home outlets. Commercially available concentrate insecticide that is recommended for public health, household use. "Efekto" make a product with the name "Chlorpirifos" that will be used as a start.
How much space is needed to work from? Very little space to store the equipment and insecticide/remedies. The work is done on site of the client.
Where will the space be found, and how much will it cost to rent?
Will store all equipment in a special room at home that can be locked-up and away from children.
What sort of people will buy the product? Who are they and where do they live? Most people in the community that have homes and shops and who have problems with pests like fleas, ants, cockroaches, ect
How much and how often will they buy? Will they come to the shop or will it be necessary to deliver?
It will be ideal to do pest control once a month on a specific list of clients. Will go to the clients home or place of business. Will offer a special deal for the second and any follow up applications

There are local pest control companies in Mosselbay. In the yellow pages 2 are listed. They cater for the upper income group population and are expensive. The have huge overheads and can not cut prices that easy.

They advertise in the local newspapers and distribute pamphlets. The also do one-to-one selling at businesses and offices. They also tender for municipality contracts.

No specific business could be found that stand out against the others .
What can be done to stand out against them? What can be done that is more exciting / more interesting?
To target the local lower income groups and to render a after sales service and advice-service to the community about health and the benefits of a clean living environment. Will also look closer into what else could be done once the business is of the ground.

How will buy? Spaza shops, Schools, Peoples for their Homes, Places of business(offices), Municipal offices

The weather will probably play a roll. Summer months will be more busy than in the colder winter months.

Quality, safety, price and results will be the most important.
How do the clients decide where to buy the products? What sorts of advertising / promotions attract their interest?
Advertising must be done and the importance of a clean, hygienic living and working environment must be stressed. Tell them why the service is so important and the health risks of pest in the home. Clients will not have to travel, the business goes to them.
Do the clients want the same things sold in the same way, or do they want things to change all the time?
They would probably like to see new ways and methods every now and then on how to control pests. New methods will make them feel comfortable to buy more often.
What can be done to attract the first clients (the most important and most difficult to get)? How much will it cost?
The best will be to start with neighbours and friend. The local Spaza shops and maybe a monthly contract with the Spaza shop for the next say 4-6 months.

What sort of prices can be charged and how much profit will can be made on each item (a rough estimate)?
- A normal seizes "RDP home" will be done for R85 that is in- and outside of the house. An extra R10.00 for any small outbuildings. A special deal for the next 3 or more times if done every 2 week. Special price of R65 for each time.
- Spaza shops and the home of the owner will be R100 and R 85 for the next 3 or more times once every 2 weeks.
- Prices for offices and other places of business will be negotiated on a one-on -one basis.
Profit will be about 40% of the asking price as above. The insecticide for a house cost about R30.00. A bottle of 100ml makes 10 liters . 100ml Bottle cost R30.00. For bulk quantities the price will come down. Thus: Insecticide-R30.00. Travel=R10.00. Capital of equipment=R5.00. Other=R5.00 Total cost=R50.00 Price=R85. Profit R35 per house.
Do the outputs have a shelf-life? Must they be sold within a specified time limit before they go off / can't be sold? Which ones?
Some of the insecticide products may have a shelf-life but its is long and will not be a problem

- Do market research to confirm a need for the service. Speak to neighbours, schools and friends and try to get one or more first customers if they are interested. Tell them the intended prices and see how they feel about it.
- Buy the equipment and products (insecticide)
- Do marketing by going from home to home -walking.
- Inform people about the need to do pest control. Do free evening information workshops in the community, and try to get clients that way.
- Distribute pamphlets and make a billboard at home to show the business to passers by.
How long will it take to get all of these things and how much will they cost to get?
To start about 3 days. The total cost about R750,00 capital needed and running overheads. Marketing another R250,00

The cost of marketing will be most if no services are rendered. That is: Cost of pamphlets, travel-cost, ect.

What is needed is the knowledge on how to mix and apply the insecticide. As well as the safety precautions that must be taken. Most information is on the in closed information brochures that come with the insecticide.

Work in a safe place where possible spills of insecticide could be safely washed away. Make special mention to clients to keep children away from areas where pest control is done. Tell clients of the dangers and side effects if swallowed, inhaled or absorbed thought the skin. Do the necessary precautions and only use the insecticide as per directions.
How will quality control and client feedback be handled?
- Will make contact with clients the day after the service was rendered either by phone or visit to find out about the results and follow up services.

How many of each of the stock items can reasonably be sold each day (and month)?
For a beginning only 2 homes per day will be the target for 5 or 6 days a week. Thus, a monthly target of between 40 and 50 applications. Long term commitments from office-blocks will be one of the major marketing challenges.

It is expected that the first week or more Marketing will be the most important task. Walk from door to door and have a sales speech work out to allow the client to make an informed decision.
Do marketing and speak to people about a clean living environment, etc. Take orders and ask for money in cash on delivery of the service.
Give out business cards and ask people to phone to place a order or make an appointment. Have a quotation book ready to do a quotation on site. Leave the quotation and follow up next day.

Not to sure. Maybe the Department of Agriculture? There is a Pest control associations in South Africa but membership is not necessary. All new developed pesticides must be registered with the Dept. of Agriculture.
